The heroes were not waiting to die, they were all gathered together with the Villains to face the Void. Thor never fought the void, but nobody were waiting to die. And since the line-up ranged from Doc Ock to Classic Strange, I'm doubtin' the Void was beating on anybody.

It says in the comic that they where waiting for the end. Go back and you will see Thor trying to fight off the Void.

They're waiting for the end. Not the END OF THEIR LIVES, but the battle. Nobody in their right minds actually believed that they were all lined up to die.

Still it took ALL of earths heroes and villains to try and stop Void

It say in the comic many times...they are waiting for the end of the world or the end of all things...it also describes how scared all of the heroes where(including thor)

Norman is trying to help Bob to get rid of the void so he is more focused.
