He was born in Benin, ergo he is African. srank commented on his nationality. He further clarified he was referring to nationality when stating Chiwetel is British - which he is, being born in Britain. He is of African descent or heritage or whatever qualifier one chooses to use. He is an African-Briton. He technically is not African sans qualifier with regard to nationality.
Chiwetel is British, yes. He is also an African. Is that simple enough?
Djimon being born in Benin has little to do with anything. Hugo Weaving was born in Nigeria--but he isn't Nigerian. Where you are from has to do with where your immediate ancestry is from, and the culture you've grown up with...yes, in those regards Chiwetel is very much British. But as I've said, he is also African. British by nationality, African by blood. Do you understand now? Terms like African-American/Asian-American are pretty damn stupid in my opinion; African-Briton even sounds dumber than the other two lol. It obscures the whole point of them being indicators of one's nationality. I see no reason why a black person born and bred in America should be called African-American, when they have no direct link to the continent. They are Americans, just as Chiwetel (as you pointed out) is British.
Hmm, guess I went off on a tangent there. Anyway, back to the topic 😄
