Oh, I'm not a fool. I've been at this on the religion forum for years. There's more than one reason to debate, though, not just because you think you have a chance at convincing the other person. It helps me hone my own arguments, and once or twice I've actually gotten JIA to discuss things on a slightly deeper level. Figuring out how to bridge the gap between faith-based beliefs and empirical beliefs is an ongoing endeavor, so I don't mind the practice.

Well said. Although I think you have a Sisyphean task ahead of you. A large part of the religious argument is that faith makes one good, instead of being good so they're largely immune to assertions otherwise. I've never been one to think that a higher force compelling you is a good excuse for any deeds. One should be good because one is empathetic and acknowledges that one wants to be good, that good is necessary in this world full of suffering and evil; not because one fears a god.
