Russia's Putin threatens to aim missiles at Europe
President raises stakes in interview about U.S. anti-missile sites

TORONTO - Russian President Vladimir Putin is stepping up Cold War style rhetoric, threatening to aim potentially nuclear-armed missiles at Europe.

The Globe and Mail reports on its website that the conflict is over U.S. plans to build an eastern European anti-missile site aimed at downing any missiles that could be launched from Iran.

The Globe interviewed Putin at his summer home outside Moscow, ahead of next week's G-8 summit in Germany.

Putin says he considers the anti-missile plan a provocation aimed at his country.

He told the paper the system is a part of the American "strategic nuclear potential," which requires Russia to act to maintain the global strategic balance.

Asked how he might do that, Putin said he would return Russia to Cold War status where missiles were aimed at European targets.

"It is obvious that if part of the strategic nuclear potential of the United States is located in Europe, and according to our military experts will be threatening us, we will have to respond," he said.

"What kind of steps are we going to take in response? Of course, we are going to get new targets in Europe."

He suggested this could include powerful nuclear-capable weapons.

"What kind of means will be used to hit the targets that our military believe are potential threats to the Russian federation? This is a purely technical issue, be it ballistic missiles or cruise missiles, or some kinds of novel weapons systems -- this is a purely technical issue."

george dubya bush:

"I will answer the question. I looked the man in the eye. I found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy. We had a very good dialogue."

"I was able to get a sense of his soul; a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country. And I appreciated so very much the frank dialogue."

Surely Bush isn't THAT stupid.

Well you've got to give Bush credit, he never fails to surprise on the stupidity front.

maybe with all the stress on the job, bush's clairvoyant power to look into man's eyes and peer into his soul has diminished?

Well we can only hope Putin isn't as stupid, because he doesn't seem to be.

I don't think anybody wants to get nuked.

It's little more than political rhetoric that's meant to upset. I wouldn't have thought that the Russian president would feel his masculinity threatened by defensive measures.

Besides, Russia doesn't have money to launch missiles.

I'm depressed now. 🙁

Of course he's not going to fire them... But this is just one more step that Putin is making towards another cold war...

Well, cold for them, they're in Russia.

I think if it just amounts to tension and cage-rattling, then we can be thankful.

He wont do anything, but its stupid for him to even suggest anything. Russia still isnt really over the Cold War though, everything takes twice as long in Russia to be forgiven and forgotten than everywhere else. Probably because of the freeze, never really thaws.

Apparently I missed the article when I was reading the Journal... Bush is very stupid sometimes.

Ever been to Alaska in the winter? It's cold there too...

And I don't think that will go into a full scale war, but the political situation between western nations and Russia has just gotten worse, again...

I'm sorry, but why is he stupid, just b/c he said Putin is genuine. If someone tells they are going to do something bad, and I look at them and I can tell they are genuine, that doesn't mean they are for my good, it only means they are true to form, that means their words should be taken very seriously. He has a geniune need to protect his country, he's genuine about that...he's not just talking smack. That tells us our next move. We don't have to volley verbal attacks, we just plan ahead.

Sorry for my lack of Russian history, but Russia has always had an up and down relationship with the Middle East and Asia; they flip flop all the time over there. If I'm missing something, let me know.

Nope thats exactly their policy on everything -just especialy the mid-east and asia.

The cold war is often referred to as a war of words. But, that simply isn't the case. All the problems that are cropping up now in the middle east are a direct result of the fact that the actual cold war ground conflict took place there.

Don't for one minute think that because we were told the cold war was over, that the Russians actually stopped hating us.

Of course, this is all completely irrelevant, because 'aiming' missiles takes about five minutes, if that. You just tap it in on a computer screen. Tje difference is entirely trivial.

There is absolutely nothing significant about missiles being 'aimed' at all. It doesn't change their threat status one iota.

Are you trying to tell me that they don't climb on a ladder and rotate that thing like a sextant?

Agreed. Putin is posturing, as the Russians are wont to do so in such situations. However, this should underscore the real situation of the modern Russian "Republic". It is in fact, a nuclear autocracy, funded only by its vast reserves of oil. Putin is no friend of democracy.
