They were blasting away at each other, Phoenix launched him away because Lilandra appeared and was being captured by Eric the Red. By the time he came back she was off through a stargate.

I don't think that really counts as "ass whooping" like previously mentioned.

Firelord controls all fire. Phoenix just happens to be on fire.
