in order to properly paraphrase (more than just mixing words/sentences and using synonyms) you must also have an understanding of what you are writing about. the reason people copy word for word is likely because they have no grasp of what they are copying. why else would someone do it?

That's true, ey. And that would apply to a whole paragraph. If you copy an entire paragraph word-for-word thats pretty obvious and if you get caught, you're a dumbass and deserve to get whatever happens to you. But I'm talking about 3 consecutive words..thats stupid. How would someone prove that ripped you off someone else's work?
