Honestly, I thought Sam Raimi did a terrible job with Venom.
First off, Topher Grace was a very bad choice for Eddie Brock. Secondly, Venom's voice... my god, it was shitty. It was basically Topher's voice with very slight enhancement. That alone ruined it for me. Lastly, he died way too easily. One of the pumpkin grenades killed the symbiote and Brock (in other scenes, the same nades do only miniscule damage to Spidey and Harry).
Part of this may have been because Raimi never even wanted to use Venom, he did so simply because the character is so popular among the fans.
Regardless of the reason, Venom was pulled off terribley in Spider-Man 3. If they do make a Venom film, I'd suggest getting a new actor, director and have no ties to SM3.
