I watched a documentary once, can't remember the name now (although if someone does, very helpful), where the crew asked people in NYC if they could point to Britain on a globe.
The conclusion? Most of those shown could not point even point to their countries closest ally and (something I remember quite clearly) some even brandished a finger in the direction of Madagascar. While clearly these journalists had an agenda, the nature of the responses shown was a little disturbing.
Now, ask a Brit to list all 52 US states and they would struggle and likely fail, but that's a slightly different ballpark from pointing out the location of their countries closest ally, don't you think?

There's hundreds of videos that do that, mostly by comedians, and they tend to edit out all the people who can find it on a map. The final cut only shows the idiots who don't know anything about the world, to make people watching at home laugh. "Gee, Americans sure are stupid......."

Is part of the reason they get confused because you just made up two extra states there?
I'd like to think someone making a post like yours would at least know how many States there are.

Well, as an American who spent about a month in the UK last year (and will again for several weeks this fall) that sure wasn't my experience.

We're not being arrogant its the truth. In a 2006 survey that was posted on these forums over 70% (maybe atleast 80%) of American High School children where unable to identify, Iraq, Mexico, Canada and Europe.

I love how it took an Englishman and a Japanese person to point out the extra two states...
