Not massive on it? I thought the UK was the craddle of Electronic music...I can name a lot of platinum artists who fit under "electronic music" who are from the UK but none to hardly any from anywhere else(Ryuichi Sakamoto is considered the father of electronic music...I think.)

I dunno dude...now a days...there is so much data out there...you can take virtual tours of places...have web cam chats...watch TV shows about people and travel channels the like...I could easily come off as a British Sociologist with some quick studying...and few people would know the wiser...

I am one of the few, because you can't actually get a cultural experience if you haven't visited the culture.

There's live concert webcasts, reviews, soundbytes etc. Do any of them actually equal being there in the crowd, seeing it live? No.

You may be right...you could also be wrong...when I refer to sociology, I am referring to the "pish posh" pontification that professors would do in a Sunday afternoon tea discussion...not a typical dude talking to a typical dude. (Or two blokes...how ever you want to call them😄)

Could you hold your own with the professor of english sociology from the University of Cambridge? I highly doubt that...he/she would talk circles around all of us...what I am saying is...you can do some quick studying of the afore mentioned materials and fool most people, but not someone like this professor I am speaking of.

It's like me saying I can surf by reading about it, you cannot gauge what a culture is like from reading about it. Books fail at a point, that's what you're wrong about, thinking that because you've read about it, you know about it. It's such a silly claim.

When it comes to 3d space manipulation, you HAVE to have hands on experience with...when it comes to just knowing some facts...you can learn those without actually having any hands on...politicians do it all the time...You compared apples to carrots.

There was this one senator who came down to visit a really small town I grew up in...he had his page/secretary do some research for him...when he came down to speak to our school...he knew all about our little habits, land marks, local festivities, and past times...it was like he lived there...

The point is, you can learn ALL of that stuff from a book or through some research...it is NOT a skill.

British culture is not confined to what is written in books, there's a lot of British culture that's not written about. Experiencing it is paramount to understanding it, sure you can spout off all you want with facts. As Cres has done with his impressive accent list, but he would still not know what a scouser sounded like, even after knowing why they're called that. That senator's the same, he could see your past times happening and still not have a clue what was going on, even with the name in front of him and his secretary whispering in his ear.

hmmm...those are real good points...I have to change my perspective then..(Creshosk and AC...are you watching this...this is how you do it.)

I now think that there are many many things that you can completely and partially learn from books about a specific culture...but there are a few things about culture that can ONLY be learned by interaction with the people...

Up to this point...I was technically defending Creshosk's position because I really do think that the vast majority of a culture can be learned without actually visiting the land/people.

Edit-I may have actually been defending the position AC/chillmeistergen thought that Creshosk was taking...from what I just read from Creshosk's post.

How is that relevant? The point is, from what he has shown to be able to provide, he knows nothing.

He can name famous landmarks, population stats and obvious things like "London is diverse.". Big deal. When pressed for more, he chose to bail.

Your knowledge is incredibly superficial, that's what I'm saying. An aspect our culture is accents, yes. But, you not being able to tell which they are when you hear them makes your knowledge entirely redundant. I'm not saying that you don't know some words that have to do with this country, but culture's deeper than that, it's behaviours and mannerisms, things you cannot read about.
