Finally your right about something

All I'm saying is they (DC) better give Orion a lot more high end feats in the future to back this up.

Starlin's writing, I wouldn't rule it out entirely.

Sh*t, I didn't even think of that.

Also, did #3 come out?

It's a comedic picture... 😐

Although, I'd love for it to be written into the comics...

Jim Starlin is good at cosmic stories, but this makes me sad. I hope they bring them back at some point. Well, I hope they bring Darkseid back at some point.

😂

I never realized how big of a prick Starlin truly is.

Jim Starlin is kinda right though. Aside from Barda and Mr. Miracle, none of the New God's have appeared in anything remotely approaching well written in a long time. Putting them into the main DCU kinda ruined them. As sad as I'll be to not have Scott, Barda, or Orion appearing in books like JLA, on the whole the New Gods never really worked all that well. I mean, Barda and Mr. Miracle were fun in the Giffen/ De Matteis league, but everyone was fun in that. Metron works well as useful plot device. Darkseid was good in the Great Darkness Saga. Barda and Orion were well used in Morrison's JLA, and Orion in World War Three was especially good. But other than those, can anyone think of the New Gods being anything but poorly written Mcguffins in the last two decades?

plus, everyone remember the Newsarama interview?

NRAMA: Got it. Finally, then, will this project lead to a re-iteration of the New Gods in the foreseeable future? Or do you think it is time to close the final chapter on an old idea and try a new concept?

JS: DC owns the rights to the character's names. There's some great names there. What do you think?

it's not like they're never going to be brought back.

I think part of it is sour grapes. I think Starlin is jealous of Kirby's work being better than his own. 😛

heh... I can just imagine Starlin reading reviews claiming that Thanos is just a rip-off of Darkseid...

"Damn the New Gods! I'll become so succesful that twenty five years from now... I can KILL THEM ALL!"

durhulk : "TRICK SMASH PUNY STARLIN!"

😆 Seriously, that is pretty funny though. And scarily enough, it could be true. hysterical

My more creative work is a bit harder to track down, but it's out there.

However, this is irrelevant. I didn't claim to be a better writer than whatever schmoe is holding the pen for this fiasco, and I don't have to be to recognize bad ideas.

Sadly, Benton is right. Starlin is starting to **** up. 🙁 Bringing back Cosmic Odyssey is a bad sign.

I just started reading cosmic odyssey actually. Is it any good?

It's real hit and miss.

Was the original New Gods series any good?

You mean Kirby's Fourth World stuff? There were three titles that he introduced the New Gods in- technically four, if you want to count the place where the concepts and characters were first kinda "road tested," "Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen." "Jimmy Olsen" is great, if your silver-fu is strong enough to deal with the sheer madness it contains. The other three are "New Gods," "Mister Miracle," and "The Forever People." In my opinion (and I imagine a number of posters would disagree with me), "Mister Miracle" is downright awesome. Sheer comics joy, great protaganist, great back story, perfect little idiosyncracies... so on so forth.

"Forever People" is really just "Newsboy Legion" in space, with gods instead of scrappy young children. Dated, immature, and to most, fairly silly. A good read if you're looking to get a well rounded perspective on the work of the King, but it doesn't hold up very well. I personally enjoy taking a half serious/half ridiculous look at comics. I'm capable of enjoying the most blood thirsty look at the world in a Vertigo or indie title, and I'm also capable of enjoying characters and ideas as ridiculous as Matter Eater Lad or Bouncing Boy from Shooter's original LSH. But.... "Forever People" is just not really that objectively good. It's a rehashed concept that Kirby himself did to death even before he wrote FP.

"New Gods" is a mix of both. A lot of it is epic, regal, mysterious, and well hinted at. Some of it, like the epic struggle between Orion and Darkseid, the never fully explained war between New Genesis and Apokolips is really good. and then there are parts where it's repetitive, and not particularly clever. On the whole, a good read, but nothing really astounding.

But I'm kind of biased. My personal opinion is, that with a few exceptions (Scott Free and Barda), Kirby relied more upon myth and less upon good writing to establish his characters. High Father and Darkseid are just two dimensional card board cut outs, only huge. They exist simply to embody concepts, and are more just forces of nature than they are characters. And while the whole premise of the "fourth world" never really requires them to be anything more than that, it's sort of bland.

New Gods was always a very interesting storyline. The twists and myths it had, including the awesome fights were pretty much one of my favourites.

Basically it told the stories of the individuals along with the group New Gods. I liked the old series.
