Oh there are ways, looking at things like: story, gameplay, innovation, character design and personality, atheistic design, imaginative thinking etc, etc...
These things (and a few more idea's that i left out) can determine what is good and what is bad.
yeah but those are all taste as well for the most part. id say the only thing you can say is objectively better then something else gameplay wise is the mechanics. for example the level the flood is objectively more repetitive then the level The Covenant.
however despite that fact that you cant really say that the flood is an objectively worse level... i prefer the look of Carmines armor in gears of war over the chiefs but its not objectively superior because aesthetic design means appearance... which is completely relative.

Then allow me to state my opinion on Halo.
Halo is an over hyped shallow series of games that does not revolutionise nor invigorate the FPS genre, it's boring and monotonous and the characters are unlikeable and feel like cardboard cut outs, gameplay is boring and the lack of enemy variation bores me.
Bungie probably got a lot of money to make the halo series and all they made was a shallow lackluster game experience that can be forgotten 20 minutes after playing.
That is but my opinion and in my opinion you are far better off playing Timesplitters.
I'm not going to lie I hate the Halo series (though it's more directed towards Halo 3) as I do FF VII's characters. But if you honestly enjoy the game then you know just play it, if it gives you entertainment then it's doing it's job.
I personally feel there are far more deserving games out there worthy of time and effort (both old and new) but if you do like Halo then that's cool, It annoys me when people get angry for me stating my opinion on Halo and the like and giving it bad rep, at the end of the day as long as you enjoy it that's all that matters so why should you take what I say seriously and personally, right?

I do like the MGS series, it's not without it's flaws but it has damn good boss fights I feel, especially Psycho Mantis who was actual an innovative boss fight.
I still have no idea what the **** is going on in the 2nd MGS game; if you don't play 3 on extreme mod it's pretty piss easy, and there are long cut-scenes, lots and lots of very long cut-scenes that you can't afford to miss otherwise the entire plot goes right over your head.
But otherwise I feel they are good games, although I would be lying if I said I didn't play them for anything other then the music and the boss fights, or in the case of the first Solid game: Liquid.
Although it's still fun to make a gaurd waggle around to drop a dog tag. 😛
