How does "gimmick" mean they're making things for the hardcore group? Considering the fact that the Wii is capturing the casual gamers like mad, as well as the DS with it's dual screens (I'm sure that's a gimmick to you as well), I think that they know precisely what to do and are doing the right thing.
If anything, the PS3 is guilty of that. No casual gamer will pay $600 for a game system that tries to be a crappy entertainment center and has a few decent games. Someone not too into games will be more likely to pay $300 for a core 360, or $250 for a Wii with the nifty remote sensors.
And since when does new or different automatically mean 'ridiculous gimmick'?
