Aside from the characters that actually have a personality. The storyline is ok, but the job system is really where it's at. Mastering a certain level of job and then being able to use it in combination with another one is great. On FF5 I ended my fight with Omega in two turns. 1 turn bartz enhanced his swords, the next turn he did a series of four attacks that completely eradicated Omega. Bartz ftw.
