It's not a different direction, it doesn't have anything in common with the series except a few names. It's not Mortal Kombat.

Eh, I see where you're coming from, but I didn't really mind some characters having different origins founded in realism (as long as they don't give an absurd explanation to someone like Goro, such as saying he surgically stapled two extra arms to himself or somethin'😉. Despite being extremely differently looking though, the characters portrayed in the trailer still had the same main features as in the games (Baraka with forearm blades, Reptile eating his victims' heads, etc.), and the "tournament" was still a main part of the storyline as well, so it felt Mortal Kombat'y enough to me. Had more of teh gore and gruesome fatalities too that both PG-13 movies lacked. If Rebirth gets made, it'll be the R-rated MK film that fans have waited for for the longest time.

I mostly dislike the mystical element being taken out.

Cause, you know, that was a pretty big part of the games.
