Well indeed.
I don't think any action game from that era really stands up to modern scrutiny. Original Metroid is full of what we would now call massive gameplay issues- all fixed for Zero Mission, though that made it pretty short. Metroid II has received no such upgrade (and it was worse than the original to begin with), and being a handheld game from the era just compounds the issue. Not without reason is it the least played Metroid game.
I always stand by the opinion that Zelda II is godawful, too.

Edit More important topic.CC, you need to read vinland saga.
Looks awesome, whats it about?
And can someone tell me why Square Enix seems incapable of making lead males that look even moderately masculine? I guess Tidus wasn't that bad though, but generally its a lot worse.
Now I think you are being rather unfair to Metroid II. It shaped the series onward and Super Metroid would never have been so good without the steps Metroid II took. II introduced save stations to the series, was the first appearance of the Spazer and Plasma beams, introduced the Space Jump, Spider Ball, and Spring Ball upgrades, gave Samus the ability to jump and shoot down, and caused the creation of her now-trademark Varia Suit. It also pushed the Metroid story forward by establishing the Metroids' home planet and their evolutionary progression, and gave the series its first real injection of continuing plot with the eradication of the species and the appearance of the Baby Metroid.
It was a high point of handheld game consoles at the time, almost as good as the NES' 8-bit graphics. Samus' sprite was expanded and detailed, creating many of the now-standard elements of her design, and making the tunnels of SR388 feel more cramped and underground.
While it is indeed the low point of an excellent series, that low point does not in any way merit ignoring, and is in many ways a core of Metroid as we know it today.
Couldn't disagree more. With the singular exception of the baby Metroid shaping the plot, M2 is a totally forgettable boring killfest and I think Super Metroid didn't depend on any of it at all. It was Super Metroid that actually managed to expand upon what Metroid was- and for sure, Super Metroid based 99% of itself on the original, not Metroid 2.
The only thing it brought to the Varia suit was the shoulderpads, because it couldn't display colours to distinguish otherwise.
It's not good and the average gamer would only find it a chore to play through.

Vinland Saga is set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatization of King Canute the Great's historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior. The presentation and style of the series has been compared by reviewers to the more realistically grounded segments of Kentarō Miura's classic dark fantasy manga Berserk.[1]
also on the square topic, I believe they can, they did do if for Zack and pre FFVII era.

As for Super Metroid owing itself to Metroid almost entirely, I say you are blatantly wrong. Super Metroid was built upon the progress demonstrated in Metroid II, and the revisit to Zebes merely determined the shape of the map and enemies. Dangerously mobile enemies like Ridley's new incarnation owe their style to Alpha and Zeta Metroids. The gameplay, both combat and the hiding and discovery of upgrades, as well as the inclusion of shortcuts throughout the map, are all owed to Metroid II.
Those are just a couple of minor gameplay fripperies that would have been adopted in any case. And I believe it is far from a minority opinion that most Metroids have a better presentational/experience aspect than 2, which is just a drudge with insanely boring and repetitive boss fights (against similarly boring and repetitive backgrounds) against the same bloody things over and over, keeping nearly all of the negative gameplay issues of the original in a far more boring setting.
The achievement was getting it onto a handhold, but from the perspective of someone looking back today, it is the one to skip. I mean, were it not for Zero Mission, I'd tell people to skip the original also, and M2 is way worse.
I'm not sure where you got your education on the video game design process, but I've no need to argue unprovable hypotheses about what may or may not have burst out of the ether without Metroid II's progression.
I agree it is the least best of the series, disregarding the mess that is Hunters, but I by no means would say that it be ignored entirely, especially with the debt the series as a whole owes it. I'm playing it even now and enjoying the atmosphere and the challenge presented, honestly.

The amount of raw manliness and badassery is beyond the impossible.
