In reality, the actual games don't really require all that. You can rock with pretty much whatever your favorite stuff is when just playing through the story mode.

I can and have engaged in metagame shenanigans but it takes way too much prep and maintenance to play. So mostly I just get pokeymanz that are "awesome" and complete the game or I make a themed team such as my all ghost team on Platinum or my recent run through Soul Silver using only pokemon used by Silver from the manga...
