Nah, I do. She is a girl who comes from a prestigious family of talented shinobi but she herself is not very skilled and is outshone by her sibling. Because of this her father really doesn't care about her. So she strives to improve herself so she can prove to them, herself, and most importantly her crush, that she can be a good ninja. In this regard, she is not very different from Sasuke as a kid.

But, the resolution with her family happens mostly off screen and the idea of wanting to get stronger is basically dropped. Which makes sense because she did in up getting stronger I guess but it doesn't help her character. Compared to other characters, like Sakura or Ino, she doesn't hold up as nicely. Granted, Sakura is a main character and Ino is part of the author favorite Team 10. Team 8 in general gets less attention than the others.

Dead characters are allowed to be plot devices. 😛

Rather hard to misunderstand a character who for plot-related purposes, solely exists as yet another trigger for Naruto's determination, and displays her emotions only around Naruto himself. To date, there is only one thing she has done that has been of significance to herself. She has not progressed since as a character, and as such, is a waste of space. I could care less for her motivations as a ninja, which are not unlike Lee's.
