Ash seems to have stopped doing that...Oddly enough. In Diamond and Pearl he left a Pokemon with a trainer but kept in touch with the guy he left it with, so he could get it back whenever. That's actually pretty awesome now that I think about it.
But yeah...In Black and White, his displays of intelligence are mostly limited to him switching out Pokemon with the others left at a lab. Smart but he's so stupid at other times that it just doesn't seem possible.
