What more can they really do to improve on the current technology? I mean, you can only upgrade graphics so many times before it's as lifelike as we're going to get with it...

Previous gaming generations were shorter because the tech was making much larger leaps far more quickly. Whereas now we've hit a point with it where it has, as you said, essentially plateaued.
