Lol, maybe we have different standards, for an over the top just-because-it's-fun game, it did it's job well. Then again, I also thought The Spirit was a good movie because of how ridiculous it was.
I expect fun, but I expect good plot/character development as well.
Example: Phoenix Wright is for the most part a fun game, however you can see the repetition presenting itself about 3 cases into the first game...however because Capcom put so much effort into their characters I forget I'm doing the same thing and I really concentrate on finding out the murderer. The characters are so well rounded and believable that it makes me keep playing.
I've said before I have no problem with mindlessly fun games I can play them and I think for the most part they are great, but long exposure to them just grows tedious after a while...those types of games are best played for a certain amount of time before swapping over to a plot developed game, they aren't designed to be played from beginning to end in a almost one sitting fashion.

See, it was by the third case in the first Phoenix Wright that the repetition got so annoying that it drove me to quit playing just because if I had to go investigate the same freaking place again I was going to throw my DS at the wall.
And there's nothing believable about the characters - they're incredibly over the top, to the point of ridiculousness. They're all caricatures.

True but that's what makes them likeable, just the OTT and their breakdowns, however when you first meet some of them they do seem believable, maybe this is more a case of main characters like the prosecutors I don't know. (Example: Godot)
I do admit there were a few times where I wanted to stop playing the game, the main place being the turnabout big top case.....seriously if anyone picks up the second game, never play that case.
Ironically the 3rd case of the first game is my favorite case in the series.
