R.A. Salvatore actually does a very good job at using words to describe events. Any action scenes in his books are vivid enough to picture in detail while you're reading.
You going to be reading his new book coming out? I am a little uneasy about it, becuase they imply strongly that Bruenor is going to die. but I have a feeling he wont (though that might be simply wishful thinking on my part).

If you want to save time becuase there like 20 books, I would read simply the Orc King. It not only the best book in my opinion, but it actaully set up to catch people up to the characters. It also time line wises (though not book wises) takes places just a few decades prior to the newest book.
