Speculations. Cell didn't actually state that was why he wanted to piss off Gohan so his hidden power could be released....
Cell was amused by Gohan's statement (about that his superior power that reveals itself whenever he goes angry) and decided to test it.

Thanos was prepared when he fought Tyrant, and with a power-up, he became relatively powerful enough to challenge Tyrant, and successfully stalemated him. Unlike Cell, who had no idea Gohan would become more powerful than him, and didn't stand a fighting chance, and once he got beaten up, he transformed into a state that maximizes his power.... and still lost, due to the fact that he was dumb enough to forget that his speed reduces in that state...
Cell didn't even leave bruise on Gohan when he punched him, speaking of which, Thanos came out pretty much unhurt by the end of the fight, and Tyrant was surprised.
So, like I said, Thanos Vs Tyrant? Big difference...
