I'm not sure about that one. That's only really one style of play you described.I don't know about the other Street Fighter systems, but the one in 3rd Strike does have offensive (Akuma) and defensive (Yang?) characters.
For example, Akuma happens to have the most terrible defense in the game so Akuma players just go all-out, while other characters have slightly more powerful ways to counter. Button bashing players are going to get punished hard by parries in that game.
I wouldn't really say that Street Fighter is the father of the button bash anyways, I'm leaning towards the original Killer Instinct in that regard.
Having been around when the series first came out, I can safely confirm it was the father of the button bash. Killer Instinct had combos to pull off unlike any game before it. You just had to learn them.
Street Fighter doesn't have a great fighting "system", one could argue of it even has a system anyway. What did they add? Power moves that you use by building up a bar ar the bottom of a screen, which is still the same system.
It's nowhere near as sophisticated as Tekken.

From the little I hear and see of SF2, yes, a lot of it was ridiculous button mashing and spamming ranged attacks, but it doesn't seem to be the case in the one Street Fighter I play.
Being a longtime SF3:3S player I know for a fact that button mashing is going to get you virtually killed in 3rd Strike. Most moves don't even require repeated presses and if someone does that, then they really don't know how to play.
What makes Tekken's system superior to Street Fighter's in terms of sophistication? They're just two different ones to me, I don't see one over the other like other people.

They changed the way that the game was played dramatically somewhere between II and III. The basics are still there as you listed, but like I said, 3rd Strike has technicalities in it that were added, which added options and strategies to fights. It requires a degree of technicality and skill that wasn't present before. From the little I hear and see of SF2, yes, a lot of it was ridiculous button mashing and spamming ranged attacks, but it doesn't seem to be the case in the one Street Fighter I play.

Third Strike is still a 2D beat-em up. Tekken has much more advanced fighting arenas that additionally change the way you fight as much as the grappling and fighting systems do. 3D fighters will always be more sophisticated than 2D SFs.
SF II, all the Street Fighter Alphas, all the Vs series, they're all more or less the same system.

It looks like Capcom did try to balance it out by adding technicals like parries, EX, plus a whole load of other things like stun-meter and cancels.
3D will always have more sophisticated arenas, but Tekken is comparably a slower-paced game than 3rd Strike, so I believe it more balances out in the long run, rather than make one more sophisticated in the other in general.

-art of fighting added that actually
-obviously a 3d fighter is going to have more options than a 2d fighter... however I wouldn't call juggle spamming sophisticated..not that it isn't a fun game, mind you
even though they feel like they're the same system.. each game has very different rules.. one small example is being able to hurricane kick through a projectile
3rd strike (Though most seem to say SF2 Hyper fighting is better) and Guilty Gear : Accent Core take the best 2d, IMO
and Soul Calibur series is still the best of the 3d fighters I've played, period. (IMO of course)
and yes I thoroughly enjoyed Killer Instinct.. its really a shame that they haven't made another by now

Hardly a change is it? Being able to move through a projective.
Anyway, there is, I believe, a Killer Instinct 2.

I was actually hoping for a sequel to the last KI (which I think was KI2:Gold)

Ive played 3rd Strike once, as Akuma, and the move set was identical to Alpha 2, so I stuck doing the usual moves and got to the last character in his lineup only dying once against Ryu. Not saying its a bad thing, but 3rd Strike is still only Streetfighter, just with a bit extra. Thats why I love SF though, you can just jump straight in and have fun. I played Tekken the other week on PS3 for the first time and got my ass kicked, its too technical for my liking and it takes time to learn to play. Not my cup of tea.
