Or how about this compromise:
You shut the **** up.
🙂.
Seriously, though, any mid-meta mecha amalgam isn't going to be inherently more powerful than a mid-meta amalgam made up of regular characters. In many cases, it'll be LESS powerful.

I'm against the use of any mecha that's human sized. It boosts strength, durability and provides additional weaponry. Come on man, amalgams are already going to be durable, and if we draft mecha pilots, we get their mecha as standard equipment.I can live with mecha as a prep tool for one round, but not as a permanent powerup for an amalgam.
Mecha would be consider vehicles, and vehicles are based on the Prep Host's base of operations. Unless someone drafted multiple mech pilots, you'd only have to face a mech once, if at all. The mech wouldn't be standard equipment, only the pilot and the their abilities would be. In order to use the mech the pilot would have to host prep for the round in which it was utilized, and wouldn't be able to use it again in a later round.

I agree that full-size mecha should be relegated to prep.
But mecha that is spidey level and below should be considered standard equipment. As mentioned, in many cases, such a character will come out even weaker than a 'normal' amalgam.

I think we'll take the case by case method. We're not going to let someone slip the Dragonzord up in this piece so you can relax Trickster.

You can field up to 3 amalgams, so you could field:3 two character Amalgams
1 three character amalgam + 1 two-character amalgam + 1 character
2 two character amalgams + 1 character
1 three character amalgam + 2 characters
etc.So long as your team consists of 3 combatants and no combatant is an amalgam of more than 3 characters you're fine. This opens up a lot of creative possibilities.
Could we have 2 three character amalgams?
