Depends on what game you own, it tells you how to get an achievement on your dashboard or on the little side screen if you press in your XBOX button on your pad, different games have different points and different amounts of achievements, as well as different achievements for different games, if you unlock an achievement it will pop up during the game, notifying you that you received an achievement.
