I like your sig.

however the rest of you is phail

They gave me a warning because I said he is determined or something.

Hail tyrants. 😱

i know its a bit off topic, but why do they all come from the comic book versus forum? (besides the fact that the vs. forum is retarded and asinine in its very nature.)

I think you answered your own question.

😉

...

Seriously though, it's at a cross-section of characteristics that produce trolls:

One, it's heavily populated. The vs. forum is fairly consistently the 2nd busiest forum on KMC (after the OTF). Large numbers will tend to produce more trolls than other sections through sheer statistical probability.

Two, it's a forum for debate, which leads to animosity more often than, say, discussing movies or games. I have a feeling the religion forum would produce as many, for example, but it has only a small fraction of the activity of the vs. forum.

Third, the comic book industry's average demographic is about 15 years old. Most GDF'ers, for example, probably average in the early to mid 20's. And there's older members of the vs. forum as well, but it's generally the younger high-school age ones that create the problems, whether it's socks/trolls or just general problems.

totally agree with that...the only time i ever get brief glances of that forum is if i perform a search as it seems no matter what you search for you get threads from the comic book vs forum popping up...just today i briefly saw a post about the average density of the earth being 5500 and something kg per whatever...i'm presuming it has something to do with some sad person trying to proof that some pointless character can destroy the earth by a magical ultra fart or some such shit

Because there are a huge number of people in the Comic Vs Forum that are young and very easy to troll. The sheer number of posters just about ensures that the troll will have a target to play with.

Which, of course, ignores the valid discussion and debate that occurs in the comic forums about a valid and entertaining hobby.

I don't mind admitting that a lot of trolls come from the vs. forum, because they do for the reasons Sym and I detailed above. But this is more than a bit undue.

He's probably right though, regarding the bit about the Earth's density and it coming up in the Comic Vs forum; it was also funny, the way he worded it.

It doesn't matter whether or not he was right (or funny, which I didn't think it was). It was an excuse to bash the forum unecessarily beyond the accurate observation made by Schecter.

Everyone's a critic...

feel free to bash any of my equally valid and entertaining hobbies

i just feel it entirely unneccessary to bring in arguments of physics into discussions about comic book characters to the degree i've seen (which i shall admit is limited) in the comic book forum

ask yourself...do you think the writers of the comics investigation every law of physics etc to ensure none were being broken by characters to the point of being impossible for the purpose that people dont argue about the plausability of their comics contents on internet forums?

of course...my post was more in agreement with schecter's 2nd part as opposed to the trolling....because i was unaware that the members he refers ambiguously to were from the comic book vs forum

Thats because you don't seem to read them.

Nice work speaking like you know what your talking about. 👆

What's Whirly's obsession with the fact that PVS posted on New Year's or Christmas or whatever? WHOA TOTALLY LAME. ****, I brought my laptop to my relatives' house because everyone is old and boring. Participated in a Christmas-day event on an MMORPG.

...Can I has a Intarwebs stalker?

Let me guess... WoW?

****, no. I should stab you for even suggesting such a thing.

"Magical ultra fart" or "some such shit"? Wow...they have a monopoly on the best of topics. How is that NOT the best thing to talk about. I would love to be able to fart a crater into the ground without hurting my butthole...butt* to blow away and entire planet? 😱 .......unimaginable.😐

*tee hee 😮

Seriously, though, your point was well made...and using planet busting farts as an example definitely did not hurt your point. I have done my fair share of comic book debating....I am ashamed. 🙁

That wasn't my point at all, nor do I care to respond to it. You're still singling out one debate (probably 1 post) and using it to generalize a forum. Right or wrong about this particular point doesn't matter...it's your larger intent that fails.

now, first off lets make clear that there is a sharp difference between trolling and a troll. trolling (v.) is simply the act of baiting for an argument. a troll (n.) is someone who attempts to disrupt and destroy all discussion in a forum, for whatever personal malfunctions. anyway, with that clarified, trolls seem to always follow the same pattern, and use the same tactics. ive always been fascinated with these individuals and what drives them, particulary their feeling of superiority and diabolical genius, when in fact they use the same tactics every time. it is my intention, with your help, to compile a comprehensive list of typical troll tactics.

very important: this is not a thread for calling out trolls. like the idiotic debating tactics thread, this is not intended for use in personal assaults.
just state your observations on constants and patterns in the methods by which trolls attempt to manipulate others. with your help this should be a great and informative discussion.

also,
its inevitable that trolls will feel called out by this thread and interfere with the hope of getting it closed. for the sake of this discussion, please ignore their silly 'fail' pics and all the other ebaumsworld hotlinks that they feel clever in posting.

so lets get the ball rolling:

a few that come to mind are:

-reversal of blame- harass and insult other members, and when someone replies in kind, play the victim. which of course leads to:

-abuse the 'report' function. self explanatory

-cry 'group think' or "herd mentality".... if everyone cant stand your obsessive annoyance, it must mean that they are brainwashed drones following the orders of some mysterious leader. after all, in a normal and constructive social setting harrasment and stalking would be welcomed and encouraged

-play 'Savior of the forums'.
they always do this and its a dead giveaway. whenever someone signs of claiming to want to bring peace to the forum, get ready for some trolling as they will attack contributing veterans and accuse them of killing discussion. one failed attempt after another to rally everyone behind them.

-sock puppeteering. we're all familiar with the term 'sock', but it originates with the act of registering a screenname which is seemingly identical to that of a troll's victim. so lets say someone wanted to sock troll me, they would make an account called something like "Schector" and copy my avatar and sig and post in my name in an attempt to assassinate my character.

ok, anyone wish to contribute?

Would lying about your political and religious opinions in a satiraical manner to cause an argument count as trolling?
