Actually, in one of the interviews I read, he mentions Ultimate Spidey, and uses the brief stint with Kitty Pryde as an example of great romantic drama that doesn't let the main relationship with MJ stagnate.
I somewhat agree with him, actually. Mephisto's a helluva random plot device to throw into it, but the basis of Pete's character is, unfortunately or fortunately depending on your view, suffering and responsibility. This move muddies the waters for Pete in an unforeseen way, and gives him yet another burden to bear. But it also opens the door to new kinds of stories.
People dislike change. I know. Sometimes their misgivings are justified, sometimes they aren't. But I'm generally not as opposed to it as most, even if I end up being wrong this time.
