Battle takes place about a week after Galactus has just consumed a planet. He has arrived and Earth, and these heroes are all that stand in his way....
If you think Galactus would win anyway, can you think of 5 more ("normal"😉 heroes to add to tip the balance? i.e. no phoenix, Ion, etc.
These powerhouses are all street level when you compare Galactus in a fighting situation. People are so quick to bring up the heroes' defeat of Galactus in various circumstances (meant to show G as being weak/bein a jobber) but they all fail to take into account that there's only a handful of instances where G actually is LOOKING for a fight. Almost every time the heroes defeat him he's about to set up his equipment to consume the planet...meaning he's hungry. He does not have a mind bent on conquest and enmity like almost all villains...he just wants to continue doing his daily grind (eating). If the line is too long at mcdonald's, he's just gonna leave and get his damn dinner at burger king. THat's the instance the overwhelming majority of the time he's been "defeated" by the heroes.
Galactus vs. In-Betweener (who had the soul gem on him), Galactus vs. Ego, vs. Tyrant, vs. Mephisto in his realm, vs. Hunger, vs. Tenebrous and Aegis, vs. Abraxas, vs. Thanos with the IG/HOTU....
...That's a small list of actual fights that big G has been involved in that don't involve consuming a planet in any shape or form. Notice that all his chosen opponents range from galactic threats, semi-abstract and abstract entities, to multiversal and dimensional threats to Thanos with various degrees of omnipotence.
So in short...when Big G looks to really throw down and consuming planets has no factor at all in the contest....just look at that list. See any street level heroes on there?
