The only thing I can imagine is that Lucas liked the shot of four Jedi with ignited lightsabres so he put it in and than realised that they couldn't do a fight that way.

That's because Lucas decided last minute that he wanted to shoot it with close ups.

but I do not understand that... they are showing they can use stuntpeople and paste faces of actors over it. So why couldn't they do that also now?
