You feel insulted? What a revolutionary concept! 10 minutes after the opening sequence of The Phantom Menace, people should have felt insulted enough not to drop one ****ing dime on this intentional abuse. I did it, though; as though I can only assume positive critics of the latest Indy film are now doing. I granted one measure of nostalgia-based forgiveness after the next for Star Wars; I won't do it again. I saw all three prequels in the theater and even bought them on DVD, assuming I'd get them home and see something that made sense that I didn't see in the theater, as though my love for the original trilogy would some how excuse or explain away the abortions of the prequels by virtue of Mr. Lucas being involved. But, all that really illustrates is that his lack of involvment in TESB and ROTJ serving to ilusrate why he is not capable. There are a lot of apologists and reverse engineers who want to explain away the glaring, obvious and intentional leaps in logic between the OT and the PT. But they are making cheap excuses. Mr. Lucas simply and intentionally ignored his own story from the OT. For that, he deserves no further consideration or reward in the form of money paid for his abortions of a suppos-ed film. Mr. Lucas was never a visionary, revolutionary or outsider; just a hack with a great idea he'd gleaned from his education that fancied himself a maverick. Sound familiar curret American voters? I rewarded Mr. Lucas' abusive behavior 3 times, once with each prequel. But I'm not going to allow him to profit from his abusive behavior, any longer. I'll no longer tell people I fell down the stairs when it's clear my husband punched me in the eye; much less will I pay for and reward his self-destructive and arrogantly-assumed box office return-certainty. These men: Lucas and Speilburg, won't learn until their abusive behavior is not rewarded by the mass-consumer audience. Not that I'm actually speaking to anyone who will listen, since Indy 4 is claiming high numbers.
I think it has less to do with Lucas, and more to do with the recent trend of actors in their 60's reviving their most successful franchises. Its been done with Terminator, Rocky, Die Hard, Rambo, and now Indiana Jones. And if all that's not enough, another Beverly Hills Cop is currently in production, and Sigourney Weaver announced that she wants to do one last Alien.
I don't like it at all, because not only do the newer installments just not feel the same, I think it displays a weakness of the actors' versatility, because it shows that the only way can make money/find work now-a-days is by appealing to fans their age.
