But how can you hear those muffled pleas when Im in my soundproof fridge..?

Its cold here.

But I should survive nuclear strikes/being thrown miles.

And theres beer.

You must be in heaven.

Well there ARE no CGI creatures here, now you mention it...

Probably neither after seeing KOTCS.
And thats the problem for serious fans of the Indy trilogy.

The alien mythology I didnt find to be a problem as much as the utter ruination of the tone set by the 1st three movies, turning newly-slapstick Indy into little more than a comedy side kick to a deeply uncharismatic Mutt, the simultaneous ruining of Karen Allen's character, the deeply wasteful use of great actors/actresses like Hurt, Winstone, Blanchett.. The gophers man...... remember the gophers.

Had Gopher reaction shots been equally pointlessly inserted in the scene in Raiders where Indy was about the grab the idol, what would that have done to the scene and therefore the film....?

Its not just Aliens or stupid fridge stuff in isolation that let us down, it was the accumilative effect of every rancidly banal and inferior/generic little brick combined that makes the wall in the franchise that is KOTCS/TOAS.

None of this registered with me. I was actually suprised at how much I liked it. Mutt was never considered the main character, that's why that joke at the end was mentioned.

And you liked him swinging through the trees as well?

It didn't bother me as much as it did other people. It was silly, but so what? Even in Raiders there are logical problems. What I didn't like was the aliens, everything thing else was fine. I liked it better than TOD and Last Crusade, though I love all four movies. I've heard most of the complaints leveled against the movie, and as far as I'm concerned, the they are without bredth. Aside from the logical gaps, it was a smart movie and very entertaining.

Well he obviously seems to be groomed for further franchise work,
and in anycase, he ate up way too much screentime/"plot" (-such as it was) to remain in the background at the rank of 'mere sidekick'.
His Errol Flynn shark-jumping swordfight and everything just made the character (and the movie) just like everything else 100% unbelieveable.. and Indy movies were at least half way believeable with a bit of effort.... The main hero -if he was to live- used to get messed up and would often blunder his way out with human style that we could all relate to. That generated excitement.

Indy movies were never about big flashy "I may as well have suddenly downloaded the amazing sword fighting skills like in the matrix for all the continuity they offer my character" moves executed by a 'character', who as the franchise soon-to-be center, is never gonna be seriously hurt, let alone killed its like ruining the movie's ability to deliver real suspense.
Like a cheat mode ruins the challenge in a game. Thats a generic movie mistake.

Taking it too far.
Indy heroes/villians dont function like cartoon characters..

They made what could/should have been a great movie into a 3rd rate movie.

And the worst part of it was that to sell Mutt as the new Indy, they turned Ford's Indy into 2 hrs of deeply unfunny slapstick generic "silly old man" too.... What about dignity...???

I don't want to see Han solo falling over breaking his hip, waking a wrinkled Leia as he gets up to take his fourth piss of the night.

I would find it entirely unneccesary to watch Axel Foley crap his pants involuntarily in the queue while he gets collects his pension
and inquires if the man behind the glass knows where his spare teeth have gone to.

I'd rather have have Indy killed in the opening credits in a heroic manner, than see this previously great character reduced to a laughing stock (often for all the wrong reasons) like this appalling pile of poop made him.

See...? I didnt even mention Fridges, Monkies, Gophers, Physics having no part, bad scripts, banal plotlines..... any of it. 😖hifty:

There are implausibilities in every film. The Idol expedition at the beginning of Raiders has no historical basis, and those South Americans sure did have bad aim with those blowpipes. The famous truck scene is preposterous. So is it in TOD, so is it in LC. Again, you have a point that KOTCS is lacking unlike the other films in actual historical fact, like the Nazca Lines aren't so close to where they found the first crystal skull I believe. Not to mention crystal skulls are forgeries in themselves. It isn't as good as Raiders but few things can be. I thought CS was leagues better than LC. As for the sword fight, some people are simply naturally talanted, it is reasonable he learned how to use a rapier somewhere down the line. The Soviets were intimidating villains. CGI isn't always ok in my book, but did you expect them to get real ones?

That doesn't make the idol improbable.
Missing with a blow pipe at that range with maybe a cross wind, sure...why not...?

Granted the truck scene was pushing it, but it still was suspend-your-disbelief-able...and the dramatic tension was so great that it kinda excuses itself.... it is one of the greatest scenes in any movie.
There is nothing in the TAOS that compares to its brilliance.

Well talented or not, those whacks to the happy sacks would have floored him, and the point is that it was just un-indy movie like..
It was just looking so blatantly choreographed/poncey/flashy.... So out of place in the action in the rest of the saga...
Also why the need for that at all....?
Why did no one try to simply shoot him..? 'Cause he is being groomed to be the new Indy in a bunch of movies that'll look very polished, but lack utterly what made the originals great....to draw in more cash for the super rich and greedy, who once were worthy of the cash that their movies drew, but now write and create like utter hacks..

The whole tone of the movie was like Clone Wars is to Star Wars
diet, watered down, lazily thought out shadow of it's former self.

No I wouldn't expect them to use real ones, neccessarily, just maybe leave them out of the picture entirely, thus not wasting precious screentime.

And I didnt really find the Ruskies too intimidating, personally.
Those Nazis in ROTLA and TLC were more fearsome on screen and historically too, and Mola Ram and his voodoo shit was pretty scary compared to Kate Blanchett's simple "Oooh arent I scary" beady eye technique.

But these are small details of stitching in a whole blanket of shit, sadly.. 🙁

Did someone just criticise the truck scene??? OMG!!! I can't believe it. It may be preposterous in real life, but so is the whole movie. All the Egyptian stuff is also downright ridiculous from an Egyptologist's view, but this is not a movie about science. All these scenes work work in the Indy world. In TAOS many things are not working so well in the Indy world. And for that I refer to the posts of my honorable fellow poster Sadako.

The truck scene was pure perfection in pace, editing, direction, entertainment, excitement and humor. It's just about the complete embodiment of Indiana Jones movies. So don't diss it. 😉

Yeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh....

*Punches palm*

😛

Amen

Maybe this is now just appreciated by us old farts, in an age where CGI action is the norm.

Maybe in time we will seem to the new generations of whippersnappers as those who watch Laurel and Hardy movies all day seem to us now...

Well.....f*** 'em. 😖hifty:

lolz

Nah... just show me an action today that works as well as that truck scene. Some things can not just be outCGI-ed.

Oh I agree, but with people making statements like that, decrying it, it makes me wonder about the young audiences of today.....

Why?

Cause ive heard one too many people failing to recognise the genius of that sequence.

It hasn't hit them like a diamond through the mind....

Me no understandy that.

Nope. Me neither. My kids loved it.

It is rather odd though. When I was in my mid twenties there was still quite a bit of reverence for older movies, like Citizen Kane, Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on the River Kwai, Bullitt, French Connection etc... they were the movies to see. Now everything older than ten years is considered OLD... and therefore outdated.

On the other hand, Empire latest poll on the 100 best movies ever makes my heart grow warm. Very few recent films in the top ten.

Glad to hear that your kids will grow with taste in good movies.

Yep they miss so much in among the flashiness.
Well thats a big score for old in the struggle for co existance with the new.

That is heartwarming in an age where I fear Joe Rogan's theory/prophecy about the dumb out-f***ing the smart may be coming to fruition.

Let's hope so.

It's rather striking. I was watching the Matrix last week with a couple of guys in their mid twenties. They felt it was such a revolutionary film. When I stated it basically a rip off (or homage, whatever you want) of other films with a similar concept and that it was heavily influence by Star Wars, they said I was nuts. Knowing how the storyline structure of Matrix is virtually identical to ANH and it uses the very plot device portrayed before (and with a lot LESS explanation) in films like Dark City and They Live, it makes me feel very old... hehehehe
