Droid memory loss

In StarWars when luke and the droids are at Obi wans hut,Lukes say's These droids say they belong to someone called obi-wan.Then Ben say's he does not remember ever owning a droid not even recognising the 2 droids?.What do you guys think?.With so much action all parties would have seen inside the 75yrs between episode1 and Star Wars it's hard to comprehend that these characters have forgotten about each other.

it's very likely that 3P0 has a memory wipe. if not i'm very curious how GL will handle that.

as far as R2 i'm not sure. it might be posible that in the intervening years he didn't recognize obi-wan. or, (i know this one is gonna sound goofy) maybe obi-wan is a clone by Episode IV and R2 didn't recognize him based on that somehow.

i think i read an interview article long ago with GL where he said something like the movies (then it was gonna be 9) were supposed to be told from the perspective of R2 and 3P0 because they were the only characters that would appear in all 9 (we see some of 3P0's story telling ability in ROJ). well, GL says now there will be no 7,8,9 so i don't know if that still applies. but i use that as a basis for arguing that R2 probably doesn't get a memory wipe.

another posibility for obi-wan not recognizing R2 is that aside from color, the R2 model of astromech droid is a set standard. when you see one, you've seen them all (sorry for the cliche).

A thought to OB1's clone:

Does sound weird but if OB1 is more than hurt in Darth Rage's battle he could be cloned to live again.

C3PO has to have a memory swipe no matter what, he didn't even recognize Tatooine in IV

ChillyBin, where'd you come up with that whole 75 years between the movies thing? It's well known that 30 years takes place between episode 1 and episode 4. I'm sure Alec Guiness would be thrilled to think his fans believe he was 100 years old In ANH🙂 As for Obi-Wan being a clone I hate the idea, many other people will to. The point of the clone wars is so their are no more clones, the last thing fans want to see is clones hanging around in the OT.

Ben didn't "own" R2-D2. He may have remembered R2-D2, but he didn't own him. As for C-3PO, (there are ALOT of planets in the galaxy with deserts) he probably wasn't sure if he was on Tatooine. Why he doesn't mention Anakin Skywalker is the real question.

With C3PO's intelligence he would have remembered just by checking the location on his memory chip. As for Ben, I think OB1 takes care of R2 after Anakin turns.

3PO should also have recognized the name Skywalker, so his memory is done with in Ep2. It would be cool to see him tortured and his memory wiped on Kessel.

He probably screws up being a protocol droid for some dark-side lunatic making machines and death star-related devices. He probably gets demolished like that one droid who is taken apart in the OT, I can't remember it off the top of my head. Anyways he might be but back together or something, doubtful, but something.

I'm actually hoping that neither of the two Droids have a memory wipe, as that would make them practically different droids altogether.

he is grey in AOTC
(and in TPM he didn't encountered OB1, and I think that it's the same in AOTC)

For R2, I agree with darth stu: all R2-units are practically the same

for them not knowing the name Skywalker? Well, as far as I know, the name Skywalker wasn't mentioned in the presents of the two droids...

Err... are you telling me that Anakin huilt 3-P0 and never told him his surname? I'm pretty sure R2 has heard it a few times as well.

Meanwhile, R2 units have their numbers on their side, and Obi-Wan didn't bother to check even though the whole 'blue and white astromech droid sent from the planet he sent Padme to' clue probably should have kicked in.

Nah, GL has simply changed the story and we will have to assume that Obi-Wan was being evasive again.

well, 3PO addresses everyone with his first name
"Master Anakin, you are my maker and ..."
"I see master Luke"
(not sure about Han, he addresses him as Captain Solo in RotJ)

And IF R2 knows about it, at that time it was just not important to mention it.

And OB1 WAS there when Panaka said the droids name was R2-D2, but as said, they are standard droids and there are a lot of blue droids running around...

So? Like I said, a droid coming from Alderan bearing a message from Leia was bound to ring alarm bells, and he only had to take five seconds to check.

And just because C3-P0 only addresses people by his first name, it's odd to assume that therefore he ONLY knows first names.

And, I haven't heared 3PO saying anything else as "master Anakin" so from what I know about TPM, he just doesn't know...

Like in history, when you are in a small community, it's enough to know the first name of someone because there aren't many with the same name around
(how many Anakins would there be in his neighbourhood)

That's resally stretching credibility, yerss. I cannot imagine a situation where 3P0 simply does not know the name 'Skywalker'

And my R2 comment was thus- Obi-Wan knows that R2 went with Padme to Alderan. Then a message comes from Leia, Padme's daughter, in exactly such a droid (an old model, at that). That should have made him think 'hmmmm...', and it would only have taken five secons to check the name. He doesn't even bother.

Well, the R2 unit IS popular
(check Luke with; "this R2 unit has a bad motivator" because that's an R5 unit)
So, that would make you (at least me) that they are standard and therefor wouldn't worth checking it...

But it is an OLD R2 unit sent FROM Alderan! Where he KNOWS D2 is! Also showing the same quirks as R2. Of COURSE he knew...
