Dawn of War 2

How many units do you get to use as compared to the videos? Decent sized army or is it more compacted?

For certain, no one Tyrannid player can build as many as were in that vid.

Damn, well I hope thats a campaign level then, looks fun.
My d/l just finished so Ill explore the game now.

Wow, frickin' amazing. Game lasted over an hour, I had pushed the enemy (3v3, all AI) back to their base, had both my allies armies attacking all three bases, I had turrets set up to wipe out any troops they built, dropped a few orbital strikes down, was waiting to drop a Terminator squad down and then the game crashed. facepalm

Even playing against Easy AI, the game is pretty hard to manage. The tide can turn in a second if you're not paying attention. The only thing that bugged me was that Requisition took ages to build up, I don't think I saw any option to increase it? And this is with just over half the map owned by me. I've never played CoH so the cover system is all new, but I got the hang of it within 5mins. Seems like games will last a while, I noticed HQ buildings have 15000hp and revive when not being attacked, so you pretty much have to gun it once you've started attacking. I don't miss base building at all, it's set up nicely here. I was a bit shocked that you only get 3 marines in a squad with no option to increase them, but it makes it much better for tactics and cover instead of just spamming with 100 troops. Also ties it with the 40K canon a lot better.

No, there is no option to increase req other than egtting req points. Which means, yes, a cock-up can REALLY set you back.Losing a squad early on- easily done- is near fatal, and small accidents in later play can wipe your army off the map, which yuo will simply never get back.

And yes, there is a LOT to think about. For all their talk of making it more accessible- removing base building (still looks a smart move) and build orders etc.- it's actually a very complex game in many ways. That's good and bad.

Talking of marine numbers- there is a bug right now which sometimes stops you adding a Sergeant to their squads. 'cos, you know, there are too many marines on the field already...

Ok, clearly my lack of CoH experience played against me here, but for sure it is very important you learn to hold and drag the right mouse button when giving movement orders, rather than just clicking. You will find yourself with a huge amount of extra control over your people as regards cover.

Yeah I got that too after a while, couldn't figure out why my turrets were facing the wrong way facepalm

It really would be freakin pwnage if Gorgutz made an appearance in this game. He survived every war in the expansion packs.

Not in the original campaign but I very much expect him later.

Definitely, the more I play this game, the more I like it.

But- and this is judging by a no-instructions skirmish mdoe only beta raher than the full game of course- I feel that the steep learning curve is its biggest problem. It's hostile to get into and in as much as they were trying to make RTS games more accessible I feel they have failed. A casual player will simply stop playing because he cannot understand what is going on in time for the game to become fun. It is all just noises and guns firing and dozens of special abilities and all your troops dead and suddenly the game is over.

And it's a shame, because under that it is damn good.

Anyway, the beta is now open to anyone on Steam and/or GfWL, so... check it out, and bear in mind it is worth sticking with.

I know its a beta, but I do wish I could play just against my friend.

Finished my first game.

It was pretty fun. I had barely any clue on what was going on, but it was fun.

You can, turn off the spare player slots and get your friend to join your game.

So long as your friend has his own copy, then yeah, that's easy.

Proposed balance changes:

General gist- reducing ranged damage. Whilst this may make the game less hardcore, I think it will help as it will slightly reduce the 'entire squads wiped out in five seconds in the open' issue that is part of the inacccessibility I mentioned above.

reading this thread, i feel incredibly lucky that i played company of heroes...

I found that out right after I posted that.

Ooops.

Just got the new issue of PC Gamer in which they reviewed this game.

Got an 86%.

One of their complaints is worrying - that the single player campaign is extremely repetitive, involving pretty much two types of missions and only a few different types of environments.

Downloaded the beta, couldn't play it. Damnit.

PC not up to snuff?
