New details about KOTFE:

Spoiler:
The new expansion takes place 5 years after the current content.
•Choices you made based on your companions will determine what happened to them. (Similar to Dragon Age.)

•There will be more content with current companions.
•You will get back some of your companions, but not all. This will depend on the choices you make or made.
•Zakuul is a playable world. It is
Spoiler:
half city world (like Nar Shaddaa,) half jungles / swamps. You will visit the upper and lower tiers of the city world and the surface.

•Leveling process is being rebuilt: it will not necessitate side missions.
•Combat is being built to be more action-packed and mobile. EDIT: Doesn't sound like a complete rebuild like the leveling process: they are just adding new skills and abilities and NPCs that are more action-packed and mobile.
•Vaylin is
Spoiler:
the Eternal Emperor's Valkorian's daughter and Thexan and Arkan's sister.

•New story is hinted at in Shadow of Revan.
•This will be the only expansion this year: there isn't a second one planned like the last 2 years.
•F2P and Preferred cannot get access to the new expansion: you must subscribe for at least a month.

The game is apparently free to play now, so I'd ask..can you complete it on your own or do you need other people in order to complete the missions?

The story mode, no, you can do that all by yourself. I play mostly solo, and I've finished 7 of the 8 different storylines.

Yup, you can do virtually everything solo.

It isn't a perfect MMO but it has been seen after quite thoroughly. Plus, it is one of the only MMOs with decent storyline, with a few other exceptions. My new GPU arrives in a few days so my roommate and I will be joining again.

For anyone that is thinking of rolling a new character, let me know and we will probably join your server.

This game has some really pretty scenery. I'm on Alderaan right now and the painterly mountains in the far distance looks gorgeous.

I just finished the class story for the Jedi Knight. Was pretty impressive for an MMO narrative, really enjoyed it for the most part. The game itself has some issues that most MMOs have, like quests all being essentially the same thing over and over again, especially side quests, and there not really being much of a reason to explore any of the planets in any meaningful way.

I also think the game has some pretty major ability bloat. Just too many redundant skills. I would prefer it if they merged a lot of skills together and adjusted the cooldowns accordingly. Essentially what WoW did last year, I prefer having less abilities but having those abilities be more meaningful and unique.

About to start the Rise of the Hutt cartel content. Not sure if I'm going to buy Shadow of Revan or just wait until October and do it for free. Is Shadow of Revan any good? Worth paying for?

SoR is not at all bad but pretty short- I'd wait until you can get it just by subbing.

There's a big load of content between the end of the story and Hutt Cartel. Have you done Ilum, The Black Hole and Section X (including the HK hunt in the latter)? They technically come first.

I bought Shadow of Revan, and I found it really great and not short at all (although I am counting Prelude to Shadow of Revan as part of the story).

Regarding good stories, I feel that the Sith Warrior has the best story so far, and I don't know how SoR is incorporated in the other classes, but it did really fit well with the Emperor's Wrath plotline of the Sith Warrior class.

I know Imperial Agent is often considered the best story, but to me it got pretty stale after a while and I abandoned my Agent at lvl 40 on Belsavis, now levling a Jedi Knight (my Consular is also doing Rise of the Hutt Cartel inbetween levling my Knight, but I don't like the playstyle of the Consular after playing Warrior/Knight).

Sith Warrior got the best mini-story in SoR.

Though if you don't mind something completely plot irrelevant and undramatic, the Jedi Knight's SoR mission is a nice mood/style statement.

Yes the Prelude to SoR is free so I didn;t count that as part of the expansion cost. It's hard not to consider it short other than that, seeing as I finished it in two days, and not being very hardcore about it. With secondaries it's all done in about three or four hours. It's by far their shortest major content to date as it only has one story for both sides.

Huh, took my substantial more time, or so it feels to me. But yes, I did it all together so Prelude blends together with SoR, and I also count Ziost, not sure if it is a part or not (which also made perfect sense for the SW).

It also brought two of the coolest flashpoints in the game imo, Tython and Korriban (very fun levling my JK at Tython after just being there with my SW, "As you command Master. By the way, in XX years the Emperors Wrath will kill you here and loot your boots"😉.

So yes, maybe it wasn't as long s the other ones, but it did give me plenty of enjoyment and I'm happy I bought it, particularly since I don't know if I will be playing this fall.

No, Ziost is a separate update released for free a few months later later. I'm not complaining you understand- with Ziost, my thought was 'woo, free update', but an amazing number of people just complained "Why does it take them so long to do anything?", as if free story content can just pour out endlessly.

SoR itself was just Rishi and Yavin (and the level 60 max).

Yes, those are good flashpoints- but not part of the expansion. Anyone can play those.

Hence for sheer value, I'd still recommend to BF that he plays all the other extra content post-game and from Hutt Cartel- of which there is a lot, and the Empire storey for Hutt Cartel is well worth it too- including the Prelude to SoR, but pick up SoR itself for free with a sub after October, which will also get him all the new KOTFE content.

I started Illum but my gear was shitty and I kept dying so I went and did Hutt Cartel first to get fast upgrades. I'll go back and finish Illum later probably.

Thanks for the opinions on SOR, sounds like waiting is the best option.

So apparently they are making story mode easier. Less side grinding. I may replay.

Make sure you use the GSI satellite console on Makeb station; it'll boost your stats up quite nicely.

Yeah for KOTFE.

If you grab Section X to get the scavenger quest, do it at the same time you get the Macrobinoculars and Seeker droid quests from Hutt Cartel (you can get them at 56 or 57, I think; there are guys on Makeb that hand them over and you can also get them from the station).

The scavenger hunts tend to go to the same places so doing all 3 at once works better,

I'll be playing this game for the first time soon. Aside from constant, irritating references to the movies, what can I expect KMC?

A Warcraft-style MMO with a lot of uninteresting grindy sidequests needed to stay levelled BUT which raises itself above the standard MMO crowd via its style and storyline for each class- but ONLY if you are well into that sort of thing. Later releases don't have the 8 different storylines but do better than any other MMO I know in creating new workable stories with properly realised characters- and in fact, it's hard to think of any comparable standard RP that has new content released for it like that, so in many ways this is not really an MMO at all, though it has a lot of the trappings. Later releases plan to phase out the side quest grinding further still (it's already lower than other MMOs I've tried).

The storytelling style is not unified either- which is a good thing as it turns out, because if you don't like the stylistic approach to a story, try another. As an example, like I mention above, the Bounty Hunter story degrades Jedi and Sith to being pretty average guys that you can kill via sheer Fetty awesomness (which I find silly), whilst the Imperial Agent storyline has an entire chapter finale based around the idea that a mere '(wo)man-with-a-gun' like you couldn't possibly take on a proper Sith Lord (which I found refreshing).

Find what makes you feel good in the game.

If you want the game as an MMO- PvP, Raids etc- then I am not the man to talk to really, but I am led to understand that it's ok, but that's all it is.

For me, what made it work was:

1. The storyline/stylistic elements were good enough (not perfect but good enough) to keep me invested in my characters

2. You only need one friend online to enjoy 90% of the multiplayer stuff, so it was a good relatively casual game to play with friends

That and its incredible cost/entertainment ratio.

I logged onto my Consular, at lvl 53, and he already had those quests in his log (and already partly completed, so it is at LEAST at lvl 53 that you can get those quests.

Speaking of those, have you doen them on both Imp and Rep? So far it seems to me to be identical to what it was as Imp, and if so then I probably wont bother to complete it on my Jedi (even though I think the final part of both of those really kicked ass, particularly the one on Nar Shaddaa).

Yeah, Ush pretty much covered it all. I'll just expand on a few things. The quest objectives are all pretty generic for the most part. Go here, kill that, click on these few things, etc. The only real difference is in the way the quests are delivered, via voice acting. It may not sound like a lot but it adds a lot to the experience and makes it all more engaging.

Also the class stories are really cool and last the entire way through, and offer the more unique and engaging experiences as opposed to the side quests. The class missions are the big epic ones that feel more like something out of a single player game.

If you find yourself bored of the sidequests but into the class story you may want to consider subscribing, as you get a bonus to the EXP you get from the class missions, allowing you to level exclusively by doing them if you wish. If you do not subscribe you will need to do most of the sidequests in order to keep up with the level curve.

The combat is also a lot like WoW's, but with more buttons to press and no auto attack. It's tab targeting and hot bar based. There aren't really many fun procs in SWTOR though, which is a key component to WoW's combat that I've grown to really like, and I miss it here.

The world is pretty static and doesn't really beg to be explored like a game like Guild Wars or even like WoW's latest expansion. There's not really a reward for exploring that I know of besides a negligible amount of exp.

It's worth playing for the narrative mostly.
