I believe that using your equipment to win is a valid tactic. In this case, Thanos was losing on his own, so using the Sanctuary II to aid him was a valid tactic.

Thanos is such a formidable fighter not only because of his own strength, but because of his formidable intelligence and battle tactics.

The guy has been obliterating planets all over the universe.
