First time through is roughly 15-20 hours plus 6-8 for two episodes. Thats plenty of gaming.
20-28 hours is a fairly standard game. And most people played through HL2 and the 2 episodes at closer to 20 than 30 hours. "Plenty of gaming" becomes redefined in the island scenario. I wouldn't be taking anything without the potential for 100+ hours, or massive replay potential. A few run-throughs of HL2 and I'd already be a bit bored.
My list, in no particular order:
-GTA San Andreas (PS2)(I played that game for a whole year, not kidding... now that I think about it, haven't reached 100% yet)
-SW Battelfront II (PS2)
-Super Mario All Star (Snes)
-MGS3 Subsistence (PS2)
-Warcraft 3 (PC)
-Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight (PC)
-Guitar Hero III (PS3)
-The Orange Box (360)
-FFVII (PS1)
-Tetris (GB) (how can you ever get sick of Tetris?)
that's asuming there's no one else with me, and there's no access to internet
I would swap MGS4 and GTAIV for Guitar Hero and SW Battlefront 2, but I haven't played them yet so I don't know if there's that much replay value...

For an FPS, 10 hours is usually the norm nowadays while 20 hours is really pushing it in terms of quality gaming.
Youll never see an FSP go at 28 hours unless its like Far Cry 2, or very open ended game like STALKER. But the majority of that time is taking up by running towards the objective so in reality, your really not hitting the actual gameplay bits.
But in the end, as Ive said before, I get bored with games that last over 100 hours, and I lose interest. I rather have a few games like Half LIfe that will change it up every 4 months or so.
Also, your forgetting the massive amount of mods that are available to the Half Life franchise. With HL1, I can play CS, TFC plus countless others, including a million SP mods.
Same with HL2, I can play TF2, CSS, Portal, Deathmatch and others.
In my mind, thats a ton of replay value to me.

At what point do mods become entirely new games that simply use the same engine? Is TF2 really HL, for example? Can I put Unreal Tournament on my list, and co-op every game that uses the engine? Seems a bit of a non-sensical loophole to me, but yeah I guess it would alter the list somewhat. Most of the examples you mentioned are clearly completely separate, and have only cursory aspects in common.
Also, 10 hours?! I'm not sure what you're playing. I don't know a serious game that takes even veteran gamers less than 15 on the first playthrough. And don't say Portal, which can be beaten in one sitting. It was an extended tech demo, and while admittedly awesome, never pretended to be a full game. Mod it all you want, I still can spend more time eating dinner than I can playing through all the levels on expert mode. Have fun with it on your island. I'll play WoW for years and Oblivion for weeks while you fall 50 million feet through portals just because you can.
😛

You don't know many gamers, then, do you 😛
I've beaten COD4 in under a dozen hours, and I suck at FPSs. And that's a long playthrough of that game. A lot of games now - especially shooters - are exceptionally short and can be beaten in under 10 hours.
Most of the 'veteran gamers' I know can easily go through a lot of games in under 15 hours on the first playthrough. A half dozen hours is more like it, really.

Using a game engine and modding a game are different though. Lots of games use the Unreal engine, but arent mods to Unreal. Counterstrike was modded from Half Life before becoming a standalone retail game.
To game length - Do you think game length is decreasing due to technology improving? If a game is packed full of high res graphics, physics engines etc, do the developers want us to sit down and have 10 hours of gameplay so we appreciate the work put into it more, or they just arent being creative in the storytelling aspect as much?

Honestly, I think a lot of the games that are getting to be so short are doing so because the developers think that shiny physics engines and graphics are enough to carry the game. But that's not the case. A game with nothing to it is a crappy game, no matter how pretty it looks.

What about say, CoD 4? Good game, good graphics etc, but short gameplay.
Although most of the CoD series has been short ermm
Oblivion w/expansions (no replay value but it's long enough)
SSBB
Madden '09
Metal Gear Solid 4
Sonic Adventure battles 2 (Chao Garden can keep me entertained for up to a year at the least)
Age of Mythology
Crysis
NFL Street 3
Lost Odyssey
Playboy (I don't think I have any porn so this will have to suffice, hopefully the graphics are decent...)
If I have time before I crash I'd switch out Playboy for Prototype and masturbate to me kicking ass.
