Seems a bit of a non-sensical loophole to me, but yeah I guess it would alter the list somewhat. Most of the examples you mentioned are clearly completely separate, and have only cursory aspects in common.

Also, 10 hours?! I'm not sure what you're playing. I don't know a serious game that takes even veteran gamers less than 15 on the first playthrough. And don't say Portal, which can be beaten in one sitting. It was an extended tech demo, and while admittedly awesome, never pretended to be a full game. Mod it all you want, I still can spend more time eating dinner than I can playing through all the levels on expert mode. Have fun with it on your island. I'll play WoW for years and Oblivion for weeks while you fall 50 million feet through portals just because you can.

😛

I really dont know what FPS you play, but if not all of them are less than 20 hours. If they are over that many hours than usually the gameplay suffers. Look at Bioshock, its around 25 hours but those last 5 hours are weak compared to the first 10. Even Ken Levine said the same thing.

But all those games, you can get when you buy Half Life 2. Try it out on Steam. Also if people can play online with an internet connection than mods should be allowed also because you just need a copy of Half Life, or a copy of Half Life 2 and a net connection. Hell, the reason why Half Life sold so well was because of the mod scene. Sometimes it sells the game. You seriously never seen the mod scene for Half Life have you?

It says right in the first post that you have access to Live/PSN/etc. That requires internet access. So yes.

Also, this is meant to be games that are out already. If you list a game that's not yet out and got stranded tomorrow, you would not have that game!

silly me 😄 ... I must be dyslexic or something since I though it said NO access to Live/PSN/Wiiconnect...

so yeah... WOW... 😄

I guess that would make sense. Opps.

But your average game is settling around 10 hours nowadays.

Because everyone is putting too much focus on the online modes and thus the single player experience suffers (not every single one mind you but for the most part they do).

Of course I've seen "the mod scene." That was never the issue, nor my original point. I was simply arguing that a completely different game (TF2, to use the earlier example) probably shouldn't get shuffled in under "HL2" when bringing games to your island. It seems like kind of a dumb loophole to sneak in multiple games under one of your ten slots.

So of course your argument trumps mine if we're including all of those. My point was that HL2 was short. It is. By nearly any standard. You changed the criteria by saying that it wasn't, due to mods. I never argued against that. And now you're assuming I don't even know what mods are, despite having referenced them in past posts. Seems a bit presumptive and condescending, no?

We get mods? Woot, then the HL series becomes a viable pick for the island. I happily concede the point, and never actually contested it.

...

As for the first paragraph, being 25 hours isn't what made the last 5 hours worse. The last 5 hours being worse is what made the last 5 hours worse. A game can be 10, 25, 50, 100 hours and be quality throughout or crap throughout. Your argument, framed as it was, equates length with quality, which isn't the case.

1. Gothic

2. Gothic 2

3. Gothic 3

4. Fable: The Lost Chapters

5. Vampires the Masquerade: Bloodlines

6. KOTOR

7. Serious Sam - First and Second Encounter

8. Serious Sam 2

9. N

10. Disciples 2

Would be a bit different if I had Internet and/or fellow players in person

I'm sorry that I offended you. I just used mods as example that HL and HL 2 have lots of replay value. Alot of those are good quality also. They way I read is that you didnt understand what I was trying to say.

When you said this, "At what point do mods become entirely new games that simply use the same engine? Is TF2 really HL, for example? They all require a HL copy and are completly free that you dl. What I got from your paragraph was that I was talking about games that license an engine but done by a professional studio. If I assumed wrong, than Im sorry but I dont how it could look at it different. For TF2, HL Episodes and Portal, I should of said Orange Box, and not HL2. They were sold as one game, and I looked at is as one game.

And I believe its true when it comes to length in the FPS genre. If you look at what people consider great FPS's, if not all are roughly 10-15 hours long. If a game like COD4 goes over 20 hours, the game will not be as effective than if it was 10 hours because its gets completely tedious.

Desert Island 10 games hmm...

Wii Sports
Kingdom Hearts 2
FFXII
Shadow of the Colossus
Rock Band (w/ every instrument, but using guitar hero guitar and downloads)
GTA IV
MGS4
Zone of Enders: The 2nd Runner
COD4
NHL 08

1. Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii)
2. Tales of Symphonia (GC)
3. Tetris Attack (SNES)
4. Marvel vs Capcom 2 (PS2)
5. Sonic Battle (GBA)
6. Mario Kart: Double Dash (GC)
7. Yoshi's Story (N64)
8. Advance Guardian Heroes (GBA)
9. Gunstar Future Heroes (GBA)
10. Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble (GC)

HL2 isn't short at all. 15-25 hours depending on your speed/skill. Above average length for a shooter.

Fair enough, and no worries. I got a bit jacked, but know you didn't intend it as insult.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on the rest. I can't stand 10-15 games most of the time. Makes me feel like I'm playing an add-on or something. Regardless of the quality, I'm just kinda like "hell, that's it?" And long-ish games can be excellent throughout their entirety. If a game gets tedious after 15-20 hours, maybe they aren't doing enough to develop a diverse enough game to be truly good, and thus have to hide it with the length. Though one could argue that a game like COD isn't 10-15 hours because of multiplay. That has to be factored in, so it in fact does become more of a 20-50 hours game for most people, like longer single-player titles.

I find most of the best games are for the PC and the most as well, none of my consoles have more than perhaps 5/6 games I regulary play on them but I have stacks of games for the PC that I go through every so often and mix up combined with mods most PC games can last so much longer than Consoles and be more fun 😄
