I like The Beatles because I like the music they made, I think it's good.I call them overrated because calling them excellent is rating them too high, IN MY OPINION. Never mind acting like every band since must owe them a debt of gratitude, and happens to be inferior.
There were better bands before, during and after The Beatles.
The Beatles are the most overrated facet of this planet's history since Jesus. Not since Jesus has the exaggeration of ability gone so far.
They are not the most influential band ever, in a musical sense. They're the most namedropped. Nothing they did on their albums changed musical perception like people before or after.
Jeff Buckley only ever made one album of original material, a couple of those songs were covers. It still more or less trumps any British album ever recorded, including The Beatles.
The Beatles aren't that great, and they're certainly not timeless. There's a difference between songs and a band's legacy lasting on its own, and people continually bringing them up because they feel they have to.
Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys is better than anything The Beatles ever did. Paul McCartney wets his pants over that album. The album widely regarded as The Beatles' best, Sgt. Pepper's, was the product of influence from The Beach Boys and Frank Zappa. Both endlessly peerless in different areas, both American.
That would be America, actually.
Without slavery, no blues.
Without blues, no rock. Simple.

Wow, this is a really late reply, sorry. I only noticed it after the latest bump.
I see what you mean about the overrated thing, in people's eyes they are overrated, always being hailed as the 'greatest band ever', stuff like that. Obviously not true. But, personally, I believe their White Album is not only their best album, but also better than Pet Sounds. But, that's just my opinion. I understand yours, too, Pet Sounds is one of the greatest albums ever made.
Again, I understand where you're coming from, but again I also disagree, while America influenced what created modern rock, I think if you ask most modern musicians (no matter what you think of their music), they'll tell you they were inspired by bands usually from the last century, and same with each generation, until it relates to the Blues influenced bands such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who, Led Zeppelin, etc.
I doubt many 90's bands would say they were directly influenced by the original African-American Blue's players from America. The sound they play comes from the style originated mainly from the bands of the 60's and 70's. Again, no Black Sabbath, no metal. Sure, Sabbath were influenced by Blues players and such, but those blues players didn't create the sound that metal took it's roots from.
