They actually do manage to grab a few of the feelings, but here's the thing: A main reason this wasn't going to work is that the show is pretty stupid. The series is original, but stupid. There's just so much bad dialogue and random anomalies that make no sense in it. It works in an Anime for, well, some odd reason, but when you make it live action, you realize the idiocy.
And it didn't help that they added a million and one cliches.

I just finished watching this movie and i'm stuck with the same question that i was asking myself all through out the movie. Why not just tell the origin story of Goku? Or even, start out with the Origin and then skip to a story arc from Dragonball Z. Now, i wasn't the biggest DBZ fan. In fact my time watching the Anime only lasted one drug riddled summer when i was 15. I'm not sure what point i'm trying to make. Yeah, the dialogue was shit but considering the source material that was expected. Perhaps the biggest problem with the movie was the casting.
The actors aren't necessarily bad actors they were just horribly miscast. I don't think anyone other than the Director and producers can see the logic in casting a skinny white guy as Goku. The actor playing Goku didn't do a bad job he was just the wrong part for the role just like nearly everyone else.
With all of this said the movie wasn't as bad as i was expecting. I received some slight entertainment. I truly believe that had someone taken care in producing a well paced and competent script this movie could have been great. Well, as long as the cast was properly chosen as well 😉
i have yet to see it. i honestly dont know if i shou;d. on one hand i love dragon ball z on the other i was young and flashy yellow hair and thirty minutes of a guy screamin like he had the worlds worst constipation was cool back then not so much now. it would have to be a compelling script... and from the looks of it eh. im also not too happy about it being a fox film. that just kills any expecttions i have. they take a good popular name throw some money at it get a script thats cheap and call it good. im just at a loss... ill probBLY SEE IT BUT I KNOW I WONT WANT TO
agreed

Its as if they didn't even bother trying to be faithful.Making Goku Caucasian was the biggest let down for me. What on earth did that achieve. You can't look at him and even for one second believe he is Goku.
