Ghostbusters 3

Yes after all these years in development hell something actually happening with it

Columbia Pictures has just announced serious plans to make... Ghostbusters 3.

Yes, folks, a third installment of the wildly successful comedy-horror franchise has been rumoured for years, but now it looks like it might actually happen. And that is reason for much rejoicing – you know, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!

Columbia has recruited Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky – writers and producers of the wonderful American version of The Office – to write a script which would, and this is the really exciting bit, reunite the original Ghostbusters, almost twenty years after the under-rated Ghostbusters 2.

And that doesn’t just mean Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), or Dr. Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) or Dr. Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), it also means the return of Bill Murray as Dr. Peter Venkman, possibly the sleaziest and most likeable lead to ever grace a modern blockbuster.

Murray’s participation in Ghostbusters 3 has always been a sticking point, but here’s hoping that the script delivered by Eisenberg and Stupnitsky will be good enough to lure him in.

Of course, the announcement of Eisenberg and Stupnitsky’s involvement throws up more questions than answers – the screenplays for the first two movies were co-written by Ramis and Aykroyd, while the latter had written a script for a third movie, called Ghostbusters In Hell.

It’s surprising that they haven’t been asked back to perform writing duties this time around – but Eisenberg and Stupnitsky are rising writing talents, who worked with Ramis on his most recent directorial effort, Year One. So let’s give them a chance.

Story details are not forthcoming at the moment, so we don’t know whether there’s any room for the return of Rick Moranis (who’s pretty much retired from acting these days), Sigourney Weaver or Annie Potts, or indeed Ivan Reitman as director. Hey – here’s a crazy idea: why not hire his son, Jason, to direct?

And, until those plot details are confirmed, we’re not sure if this new Ghostbusters flick will involve the original quartet handing over to a younger, newer group of Ghostbusters, as had been strongly rumoured in the past. We hope not – we’d love to see the Ghostbusters back in town one more time and, as certain revived franchises have perhaps proved, crowbarring in young sidekicks doesn’t always work.

I think the original idea of doing an animated film is the way to go but as long as the main focus is on the original four characters i will be happy with whatever comes of this. As long as it is better than Ghostbusters 2, of course 🙂.

I must one person(probally a few others) that actually liked the second one

I liked the second one myself, but not as much as the first one.

I wonder if they're going to pull a Star Trek XI, hire younger actors. After all, there's a lot of ageism in Hollywood these days.

But I'd still see the film anyhoo,

I think this will be forgotten about again. That's the reason the video game was made, because only Aykroyd and Ramis were on board for a third movie. It's surprising to me that Murray jumped on board because before the video game, he gave a firm no, which lead the studio into considering Ben Stiller as the lead.

Ramis looks COMPLETELY different since Ghostbusters. I didn't even know he was in Orange County until I read the credits.

They're all too old/out of shape to do it now. If this was announced a couple years after Ghostbusters 2, I'd be all for it.

And I liked Ghostbusters 2 as well.

I agree. As much as i would love to see this movie. I think it will only work if they do, indeed, bring Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg onboard. Having the original cast teaching a new breed of Ghostbusters seems like a good idea to me. Having the movie focus entirely around the original cast is just ridiculous though.

But has passing the torch ever worked in Hollywood? It'd be like Shia LaBeouf taking the lead in Indiana Jones 5.

I agree that it would be hard to pull off but with Akroyd and Ramis directly involved in the writing as well, i think a story revolving around, "passing the torch", would have great potential. Whether or not they would make a ghostbusters 4 with the new cast shouldn't be any concern for this story. The formula of the Ghostbusters is humor and sci-fi with humor being the main ingredient. as long you find the right cast who knows how to do subtle humor, i think it would be a relatively smooth and acceptable transition.

Gustboaster waz like ona my favrit moveis, yo, but prt 3 no tankz!

I wonder if the group will be able to get Rick Moranis out of retirement even tho he's said he's retired from acting.

The soon to be released Ghostbusters video game, for all intensive purposes, is said to be the closest thing to a Ghostbusters 3. All of the original actors will return to lend their voices to the game, except for Rick Moranis who declined to come out of retirement.

does anyone really care about Rick Moranis anyway? Maybe i'm one of the few people that is glad he retired but when i think Ghostbusters, Rick Moranis is one of the furthest things from my mind.

i thought he was dead...

I loved the first Ghostbusters, the second one not so much..

Why they are waiting such a long time could certainly dereail any chance of success

I liked Rick Moranis.
"My guys are still under a judicial mistrangement order... that blue thing I got from her!"

In fact, I liked all the cast.

Ghostbusters 3 Rolling This Fall?
Source:AICN February 23, 2009

Dan Aykroyd fielded questions at a House of Blues opening in Boston, Massachusetts recently. Naturally, Ghostbusters 3 was brought up during his online Q&A. When pressed for details on the threequel, he replied "Script is commenced early summer. Hope to be in production by late fall 2009."

As AICN's scooper pointed out, this would mean if the studio digs Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky's script (the two were brought on last September) a greenlight could be granted in May or June. Prep work would begin for a fall principal photography start.

In this new entry, original Ghostbusters Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson would return in some capacity. There are rumors they would hand the Proton packs and ghostbusting duties to a new team.

I'll cross my fingers that this doesn't happen.

Why ?

They should leave it at 2
