Star Wars is more for having fun. Ive watched the movies countless times and can still be excited by them.

The Lord of the Rings is a richer and more mature world, and its purpose is to shed light on the the natural beauty of our own world.

The Star Wars universe is no doubt larger, if we take the EU into account. You could fill a library with all that material. Literally.

The Lord of the Rings has a more meaningful universe though, every part contributes to the whole. Different places in Middle Earth each have powerful and unique feelings to them.

Overall I really cant say which is better. They are both great achievements of mankind.......500 years from now, people arent going to be reading pseudo intellectual crap from Ayn Rand. People are going to be watching Star Wars or reading LOTR because they actually enrich our lives and make them more meaningful.
