I just watched George Romero's original 1973 version of "The Crazies", in honor of the new remake coming out this Friday. The original is awesome; it's a shame more people don't know about it! Romero was doing the "infected zombie" thing waaaaaay before movies like "28 Days Later"! I highly recommend picking it up on DVD. (Or you can win it - apparently several websites got packs of George Romero DVDs to promote the new movie, including the original; here's the one I saw on Twitter:

Either way - go and see the original film; it's a classic!)

They were not zombies in 28 Days Later. 😛
Technically, neither "28 Days Later" OR "The Crazies" has zombies in them, if you're going by the old-school definition of zombie=undead. Both movies are actually just humans infected by a virus. But, the term "zombie" has sort of become a catch-all in more recent years for anyone that is mindlessly driven to kill, be it from voodoo, virus, satanic curses or just all-around hunger for the delectable taste of brains. 😛
Whether it's virus zombies or graveyard zombies, I'll take 'em all - can't wait to see the new zombie/not-a-zombie movie remake of "Crazies" this weekend!
