What is the best movie ever?

Yeah, add Pulp Fiction to this list because many people consider it the "best movie ever." I don't, but it's damn popular/well-liked.

This.

Perhaps.

But for the purpose of discussion I propose this method:

Process A

Where elements of a film's merit are of a subjective nature, we consider whether it has a demonstrated a *high capacity to appeal to the audience*.

If such an element does demonstrate a high capacity to appeal to the audience, then we grant it B status. Otherwise it retains A status.

B status > A status.

B status = B status

and Process B will always be used to seperate films of B status.

A status = A status

and Process B will always be used to seperate films of A status.

*How exactly this is determined can be decided at a later time.*

Process B

Where Process A is concerned with elements of subjectivity, Process B is concerned with elements of objectivity. Process B involves an objective analysis of a given film's merits.

Process C

Upon the completion of Process A and Process B, Process C is concerned with comparisons determined by evaluation. The merits of the individual components of a film will be determined by Processes A and B, and Process C will be concerned with evaluating the significance of the individual components with respect to what it means for the film it forms a part of, and what it means with respect to the medium as a whole (which may also be analysed in this process).

Thoughts?

My thoughts are that you have put too much thought in to it. Just let people have the films they consider best.

The Big Lebowski.

STFU Donnie!

.

Scarface.

.

Groundhog Day deserves a mention. Almost PERFECT film.

Not any than Avatar.

"Pitch Black " did it for me.

Battlefield Gigli

I realize that this question helps to generate discussion and debate, but it is just too subjective. Moreover, to think that any one film can be the "end all" for films that have covered so many genres, eras, styles, and mediums is a stretch in logic. It's a never-ending discussion.

The best movie ever is Going The Distance. It's really a superb movie..

Has to be per genre, not overall - there are too many different elements to try and fit into one film.

For me, the list would be sorta like:

Scifi:
The Matrix

Inspiring drama:
Dead Poets' Society

Shakespeare:
Midsummer Night's Dream

Romantic comedy:
Roseanna's Grave

Comedy:
Groundhog Day

Marvel superhero:
Iron Man

DC superhero:
Batman Begins

Classic DC superhero:
Superman

Action comedy:
The Last Boy Scout

Psychological thriller:
Silence of the Lambs

Dark action:
The Crow

Documentary:
Amandla

etc...

I can pick a Best Of per genre, but overall? There are just too many elements to take into consideration, and no film that I can think of contains everything, from humour, to action, to beautiful scenery, to great acting, to great soundtrack, to an important message, plus special effects, etc...

👆 Nice list

Yeah that is a nice list,The only thing I would change is The original Star Wars movie from 1977 as best sci fi film.I also noticed that Drama wasnt mentioned so that being the case.I would add for Drama-JFK unless maybe you would put that in documentary since its mostly based on evidence and facts.

my favorite movie ever is ,... Titanic,..
because its great love story movie,..
