Here you go, enjoy, this came from infinite crisis writer and he was basically comparing both supermans to see which one is more powerful and gave a bio of there powers. This is about the only bio that has been given for superman. There was one made for wonder woman also and this same bio that Im presenting will be put in the new dc encyclopedia.

Its his bio and it was a interview that was again put in by the writer of infinite crisis. Even in the comics during the flash race, that was the only speed that was quoted, 2000 mps. Hell every speed feat that superman has on earth is in that range of speed.

When DC has tried to quantify Superman speed (give the how fast he is going) it always been lower than light speed.
Perhaps in space there is a way Superman far exceeds light speed but its only on earth(or a planet) he claimed that going faster than speed of sound will cause major environmental damage or sonic Booms in cities etc(post 2000) that could explain why he would use top speed on earth.

But writers need to WAKE UP

Superman can run 2k per second. what does that have to do with his flight speed?

Its not contradicting anything, the thing that you have to think about is that if youre going by space flight alone then almost every mid to high herald character can go light speed. Hell that even mean that rogue from the xmen can go at least 99% the speed of light.
