3 feet isn't a big distance. DD could just as well disarm blade of his weapons anyway, since he is a much better fighter. He has after all successfully fought 100 armed yakuza tanked up on some enhancing drug called MGH.

But we all have to admit that a lot of the times bad writing occurs that sometimes contradicts things that we have read and/or seen (just pick up a recent copy of the Hulk).
