If GTA IV doesn't win, I'll shit myself. Aside from the somewhat weak storyline, the game was flawless. And the amount of content they managed to cram into it was ridiculous.

If there was so much content crammed into GTA IV, why are there more things to do in GTA 3; San Andreas? I'm not hating on GTA4, i bought into the hype and found myself devastatingly disappointed. That, however, was my fault. It took me a long time to appreciate GTA IV for what it was. It did a lot of things right but the one thing it did wrong was shroud the sense of freedom that the previous games offered. GTAIV was more linear than any of the previous installments. I think that was actually a good thing though but once i completed the game, i never had a desire to play the game again because i had already exhausted every feature and scenario that the game had to offer.

Where as, the previous Grand Theft Auto games, well, hell, i have to admit that i never beat any of them. I didn't beat 3, Vice City or San Andrea's but, i played each one of those games far longer than i played GTA IV and when i stopped playing the previous GTA games, i still felt that there was so much that i was missing out on. Seriously, i played GTAIV for maybe three weeks and i did everything that the game had to offer. The other three, well, i played those until the next GTA released which is why i never got to finish any of them. When Vice city came out i was still to busy playing GTA3, but vice city was so much better so i had to go on to Vice city and the same for San Andreas. Also, you have to remember, that there were years in between the release of these games. So, what happened with GTA IV, why was their so little to do in the game?

Ok well I have the third one and Vice City and personally I wasn't a big fan of 3, but I thought VC was awesome, probably because Tommy Verceti was a cool character. I bought San Andreas but returned it after a week and got Conker Live and Reloaded instead. San Andreas just wasn't my thing. I wasn't into being a black guy and moving up from the slums to whatever. (please don't call me a racist for that) I hated all of the characters.

However the characters in GTA IV were awesome, which was one of the biggest reasons why I liked it better. To answer your question I think the graphics had a big reason to do with the lack of content from the previous games. Driving around liberty city was awesome.. maybe I thought it was especially cool because I live an hour away from NYC but whatever. and I don't remember San Andreas having multiplayer but I could be wrong. The giant 16 player games where you could roam around the entire map were incredible.

I think the moment when I really knew that GTA IV was a great game was when I took off in a helicopter while having 6 stars on me. At the last minute a cop got out of his car and leaped on to the sleds. I flew up about 300 feet before he fell to his death. It was epic.

I don't mean to seem picky, or make you paranoid, because I know if I reply to you in more than one thread you seem to think I'm chasing you, but I'm curious about something.

The defining reason for Grand Theft Auto 4 being a "great game", to you, was the singular moment whereby a cop grabbed onto helicopter sleds?

This is precisely why games get overrated. People can't tell the difference between what makes a game great, and a game simply having some fun things.

The two can be synonymous from a subjective point of view.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the one heavily implies the other.

If such a small thing like "A cop hung onto my helicopter." makes the entire game, story and everything involved great, then standards need to be assessed.

Why?

In my opinion, because you're judging a whole by a part.

People who do that are the equal to men who thought Basic Instinct was good because Sharon Stone uncrossed her legs for a giga-second, instead of finding something in that vein that was just...more appropriate, i.e; watching porn.

Ok maybe I phrased that a bit wrong. It was very apparent from the first couple of hours of gameplay and cinematics and what not that GTA IV was a great game... but when that cop hung on to the helicopter as I took off it was just one of those "holy shit" moments. Much like being eaten by a giant worm in gears or killing a scarab for the first time in Halo.

Personally, no cinematic is enough to make a game obviously great.

"From the first couple hours of GAMEPLAY and cinematics"

Just wanted to make sure you got that part

NOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Fable II was announced game of the year! Epic is gonna kick Lionhead in the groin for this! 😠
