Some people are rather, "sour" to put it nicely. They believe easy outcomes come easier to others than theirs and believe that hardships should come to those ready to meet them. They are afraid of the outside world and see smiling as a sign of weakness because the world is a terrible to them.
I do not believe smiling is a sign of weakness, it is a sign of friendlyness and joy. There is another type of smile though. Those who smile through their teeth to get on someone's goodside or mislead. These peaple are swine, just that.
A smile can show weakness by revealing other intentions depending upon circumstance, if you're intuitive enough or if the one smiling is obvious enough.
I.e. a nervous or "fake" smile could betray one by letting others on to something amiss or portend that one is being dishonest.
So, yes, given the right circumstance, a smile can show weakness.
