as far as the topic goes.
hawkman smashes his mace off gor's (sp?) face. the next page has black lightning using red sun energy on a kryptonian. the next page has gor (with a bloody lip, and hawkman nowhere to be found) standing over a special policeman guy. gor gets hit in the head by guardian. then power girl (an earth 2 kryptonian) fights one. we then see starfire use UV rays against a kryptonian. then we see steel use kryptonite, steel being one of the most knowledgeable people about kryptonians on the planet.
nobody is out-muscling or out-speeding the kryptonians (bar the gl's, but they're mid/high herald anyways). people are exploiting weaknesses, weaknesses they all know one way or another.
gor appears in action 873 later, still in one shape. he smacks both john and hal, only to be put down by superman.
funnily enough, between that issue of superman and the issue of action that continued from it, hawkman magically gets a new mace...
