They seem to lean more towards it BFR'ing him rather than killing him. They knew there was a solid chance he survived, and they knew exactly what would have happened had he survived.

Died for nothing? You act as if He was killed. He willingly killed himself. He saved many people. Nobody could have defeat Prime easily. While depowered, Prime was able to use his HV and almost kill Superman. He wouldn't have much problem destroying earth
The guardian killed himsel fin an abysmal failure while powering up Prime and making him someone else's problem.

He went straight through AM and he wasn't erased. He wouldn't have trouble punching earth to death. The only ones who can stop him are Flash' and Guardians.

Last I recall a definite power output being shown by a Guardian, it was "the power of a dozen hurricanes."
Now, on panel it was also said one could crack a planet in half with a thought. But that wasn't displayed...just talk.
