So as my very first post to these forums I figure I'll go ahead and post my opinion on this fight, seeing as how the thread is still alive and all. Fair warning, I could only stomach the first three or so pages of this thread, so I don't know if a general consensus has been reached. Neither Link nor Sephiroth are my favorite video game characters and I hold absolutely no amount of bias towards either of them.
Having said all that, the fight itself is poorly defined in terms of what the contestants are allowed so I'm going to assume they have whatever gear they might generally have on them. Link's best shot lies in a battle of pure swordsmanship, but I'm afraid he still loses that. It's not a stomp by any means, but Link eventually wears down, allowing Seph to go for a kill strike, and this is assuming that this is before Seph goes insane and begins to acquire all kinds of ridiculous abilities. In terms of skill I'd put Link far above Cloud for the most part, but Sephiroth is just better. That's not favoritism, that's just the way the creators of the game intended him to be. Better than everyone else.
Alternately, if both fighters are at their strongest the battle goes even more in Sephiroth's favor. I'm using end of game Seph and a typical end of game Link in this fight. Sephiroth doesn't toy with Link for too long before he ends it and moves on to opponents who are more on his level.
In Link's defense this fight isn't really fair, just like a fight between Link and most other end of game RPG bosses wouldn't be fair.
